What is a nautical mile and how does it relate to degrees?
A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres — defined as one minute of latitude. Since there are 60 minutes in a degree, 1 degree of latitude ≈ 60 nautical miles ≈ 111.12 km. This is why aviation and maritime navigation use nautical miles: distances on charts map cleanly to degrees.
Why are degrees of longitude shown but flagged?
A degree of longitude is only ~111 km at the equator and shrinks to zero at the poles (it scales by cos(latitude)). The "degrees of longitude" entry here is approximate and assumes the equator — for real longitude distances use the Distance Calculator.
