Frequently Asked Questions

How does this tool determine what state I am in?

It uses your device GPS to get your latitude/longitude, then queries the OpenStreetMap reverse geocoder to find which state/region contains that point. This works globally — not just US states, but also Canadian provinces, Australian states, UK counties, German Bundesländer, and so on.

How accurate is the result?

The state is correct to within metres because state boundaries are precise polygons, not approximations. Your GPS reading, however, may be off by tens of metres in cities and kilometres on a VPN — the result reflects where your GPS says you are, not necessarily where you physically are.

Does it work outside the United States?

Yes — the underlying data is global OpenStreetMap. The field is labelled "state / region" because outside the US the equivalent division has a different name (province, region, Bundesland, prefecture, etc.). The result always shows whatever the local name is.

Why does it ask for permission?

Your browser asks before sharing your GPS location. Click "Allow" for your actual location, or click "Deny" and type an address manually. The coordinates are processed in your browser; the lookup goes to our geocoder over HTTPS.
