Frequently Asked Questions
How does this tool find my location?
It uses your browser's Geolocation API, which on phones uses GPS and on laptops uses a combination of Wi-Fi positioning and IP geolocation. Your browser will ask permission the first time. Your coordinates never leave your device — the distance is computed in your browser.
What distance does it measure?
The great-circle (as-the-crow-flies) distance, which is the shortest path between two points on the surface of the Earth. It's not the driving or walking distance — those are longer because they follow roads. Multiply by ~1.3 for a rough driving distance estimate.
Can I measure the distance to an address instead of coordinates?
Yes — type any place name or address into the target field. The tool will geocode it first (using our free geocoder) and then measure from your location. Try "Tokyo", "the Eiffel Tower", or "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC".
Why does my location look wrong?
On a laptop without GPS, the browser estimates your location from nearby Wi-Fi networks. This is usually accurate to within 50 m in cities but can be off by kilometres in rural areas or if you're on a VPN. Phones with GPS enabled are accurate to a few metres.
